Betty Joan Berlett

Betty Joan Berlett, 83, lifelong resident of Piper City, IL., died at 2:55 A.M., Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Riverside Medical Center, Kankakee, IL.., following a sudden illness. Her funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at St. Peter Catholic Church, Piper City, concelebrating the mass will be the Rev. Michael Pennock and Rev. Richard Brunskill. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Piper City. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday, January 11, 2013 at Reilly-Redenius Funeral Home in Piper City. Recitation of the rosary will be at 3:30 P.M., at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Donor's Choice.

Betty was born on March 3, 1929 in Piper City to Allan John & Irene (McGuire) Berlett. Her childhood was spent in Piper City. She graduated from Piper City High School in 1947 and was an Alumni Officer for many years.

Survivors include cousins - Peg Bargmann, Butch McGuire and John McGuire all of Piper City, Richard Doran of Fairbury, IL., Michael (Georgia) Doran of Forrest, IL., Marilyn Weidner of Eureka, IL., Al (Jane) Freehill of Chenoa. Special friends - Pat Gallahue, Barbara Kuipers, Viola Kumpf, Marilyn Hamilton, Rosemary Bargmann, Erma Scherer and Pat Monahan. Godchildren - Dale Freehill of Fort Lauderdale, FL., Margo McGuire Lucido of St. Louis, MO., Chip Block of Kankakee, Marla McGuire Fuesting and Bette Sterrenberg Boruff. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and Godson - James Shaughnessy III.

She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, the C.C.W. and board member of the Calvary Cemetery. Betty had worked at Producers Seed Company for 10 years and was the first IBM Operator in Piper City. She also was an IBM Supervisor for 6 years at Honegger Farms of Forrest, Hicks Grain Terminal, Pillsbury Company of Roberts as Grain Merchandiser for 21 1/2 years and office manager serving 20 years at the Danforth-Gilman Grain in LaHogue, IL. Betty was the owner of The Cubby Hole Antique Shop in Piper City in the 1950's. She was the first female elected to the Piper City Village Board since the town was founded in 1869, holding office from 1985 till present day. Betty was manager of the Piper City Community Hall since 2003., Board of Directors of the Piper City Historical Society, former secretary and office holder of the Ford County Republican Women and secretary of the Piper City Republican Women.
